What is the difference between a Solid-state Frequency Converter and a Rotary Frequency Converter?


Solid-state frequency converters rectify your incoming 50Hz or 60Hz AC power to DC, then use large power transistors to chop it back up to output a synthesized AC sine wave, also known as a modified square wave. By design, transistors can only be fully on or fully off; the resulting output signal is choppy and does not resemble a smooth sine wave.


Rotary frequency converters produce a sine wave in exactly the same way your utility generates it. By using a synchronous rotary generator, our frequency converters are able to produce a power signal that is indistinguishable from your grid power. In fact, due to their design, the power output signal is often cleaner and more stable than utility supplied power. Harmonics, spikes and sags on the incoming line are unable to be transmitted through the converter, because the input and output are completely isolated from one another.


TEMCO Rotary Frequency Converters have a much higher surge capacity than equivalently sized solid state units and can support. Starting large inductive loads that can have an inrush current as high as 300% of their running amperage can be troublesome with solid state converters, sometimes even causing the converter to shut off completely due to overload. With a TEMCo Rotary Frequency Converter, these momentary surge demands are not a problem because of the ability of the generator to ride through the spike.

Features

Self Contained Frequency Converter

Line Isolation, Harmonic Cancellation, and Power Factor Correction

TEMCo Rotary Frequency Converters provide the benefit of mechanical Line Isolation. All the electricity from the incoming power source is converted to mechanical energy in the motor shaft. This mechanical energy is then transformed back into electrical power by the generator. This energy transformation from electrical to mechanical and back to electrical means that any harmonic distortions present on the incoming line cannot be passed through to the output of the converter. By mechanically isolating your equipment from the utility power, TEMCo Rotary Frequency Converters provide a cleaner and more dependable energy source.


Your line power may suffer from brown out conditions, transients, spikes, and more. However, TEMCo's Rotary Frequency Converters will not deviate from their rated frequency. In fact, their actual output is often better than what you would normally see on your utility grid. Using a one of our unitis like having your own power generation plant right in your facility.


Many commercial utility consumers report that other users connected to the same power grid who switch large industrial loads on and off can cause momentary brown outs, surges, poor power factor and harmful transients to their power. These spikes can momentarily exceed 800V on a 240V line. This is just one example of the dangers that lurk in the commercial utility system environment, but the scenarios are countless. Unless something is put in place to stop these power conditions from reaching your machinery, your equipment will take the impact in full force.


Simple motor type loads may last a while and are fairly resilient under such conditions, but over time, this can cause insulation breakdown, then ultimately, complete failure. Sophisticated loads such as solid state devices, CNC machinery and all computer controlled loads cannot handle these situations; results are usually terminal on the first occurrence.


TEMCo Motor Generator Sets can automatically compensate for power factor robbing equipment. This helps considerably when loads are complex, unbalanced or nonlinear. Remember that good power factor is essential to the electrical health of your hardware and contributes heavily to the operational efficiency.

Our frequency converters come factory configured for your requested output voltage and can be field adjusted to fractional volt accuracy. TEMCo Frequency Converters rely on sophisticated voltage regulating components that constantly monitor and adjust to maintain voltage tolerance of typically +/- 1% and better. This also applies to frequency regulation for both induction and synchronous units that assure you of precise frequency control. Custom models are available from 2.5 kVA through 50 MVA power output. Available standard configurations include:
